11/18/2020 American journalist Ali Abunimah is co-founder of the Electronic Intifada and author of "One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Israel-Palestine Impasse'' and "The Battle for Justice in Palestine." He discussed post-election administration policy on key issues. Will the administration demand any pause to illegal Israeli settlements? Will Israel be successful in continuing to use the coercive power of the U.S. State Department and other key agencies to demand Arab nations establish formal ties with Israel? Will the drive to label human rights organizations as "anti-Semitic” prevail? Audio Download

11/13/2020 Grant Smith discusses the concept of “QME”, or “Qualitative Military Edge,” and how Israel and their lobby in the U.S. use it to get billions of dollars from the American taxpayers. Smith explains that during the Cold War, the doctrine of QME was used to keep the U.S. ahead of the Soviet Union and its allies—today, the same doctrine is being advocated by those who see Israel as a beacon of freedom and goodness amid a sea of enemies. And they use this concept to justify billions of dollars worth of arms “sales” to the Israeli government, which really, says Smith, amount to taxpayer-funded giveaways. Audio Download.

10/29/2020 Grant F. Smith is the author of seven books about the Israel lobby, and research director of IRmep. His most recent books are "Big Israel: How Israel's Lobby Moves America" (2016) and "The Israel Lobby Enters State Government: Rise of the Virginia Israel Advisory Board" (2019). Continuing an election year tradition, Smith presented his most recent research findings about Israel affinity organization legislative, executive agency and state government lobbying initiatives. He discussed in depth the trajectory, roles and relative importance of Jewish establishment lobbying (such as AIPAC and the Zionist Organization of America) vs. relatively more recent Christian Zionist lobbying. Smith also explored the Israel lobby's latest major program—importing and subsidizing Israeli companies to compete with domestic U.S. companies. As a case study, Smith gave an update on recent initiatives and the cloud of corruption enveloping the Virginia Israel Advisory Board. Audio Download

09/27/2020 Historian and author Walter Hixson answers cross disciplinary questions about foreign policy, the Israel lobby and settler colonialism. What are the core objectives of settler colonialism? Why must the population targeted for removal be the object of hatred and portrayed as primitive, uncivilized and "savage?" Massacres can exist without genocide, but can genocide exist without massacres? Are indigenes ever allowed to avail themselves of the colonizer's means of communications and justice system to argue their case? What Is perpetrator trauma? Audio Download.

09/25/2020 Interview with Jeremy Rothe-Kushel of the program "Understanding Israel-Palestine" on the rise of the Israel lobby in America, prominent figures, Israeli nuclear weapons espionage and related topics. Audio Download.

09/18/2020 Scott talks to Grant Smith about the role of evangelical Christians in the Zionist movement in America. Grant examines the premise that evangelicals are the most significant driving force behind American support for Israel, a popular notion ever since George Bush Sr. blamed his loss to Bill Clinton on his failure to appease evangelical voters on the issue of Israel. But Smith argues that their influence is overblown. He says that the power wielded by actual lobbying groups like AIPAC are still the overwhelming driving force in shaping U.S. policy toward Israel, pushing for things like weapons sales, anti-BDS legislation and the moving of the American embassy to Jerusalem. Audio Download.

09/17/2020 Christian Ziionism & Settler Colonialism with Reverend Don Wagner. Rev. Donald E. Wagner, is the author of “Zionism and the Quest for Justice in the Holy Land.” Until recently, historical and political accounts of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have ignored or understated the influence of Christian Zionism in British and U.S. policy in the Middle East. Reverend Wagner examines Christian Zionism in relation to Britain’s 1917 Balfour Declaration during the British Empire and how “Manifest Destiny” and settler colonialism have influenced attitudes about Middle East policy in the United States. Audio Download

Christians United for Israel (CUFI) has proclaimed itself the largest pro-Israel lobby in the United States. With its intimate partnership with AIPAC and various Zionist think tanks and lobby organizations, Christian Zionism’s political profile has been elevated to new heights during the Trump-Netanyahu alliance. But who is really setting the agenda? And at what cost? Have Christian evangelical leaders been a force on Capitol Hill, beyond urging its adherents to the ballot box? How do Christian Zionist lobbying expenditures stack up against Jewish Zionist organizations? What was Secretary of State Pompeo trying to accomplish by speaking to the Republican National Convention from Jerusalem?  Audio Download

09/10/2020 American Jews and Israel: A Faltering Relationship with Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb and Allan Brownfeld. Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb, an organizer with Jewish Voice for Peace, will describe Jewish Zionism as a failing ideology for many younger American Jews who reject Israel’s oppressive occupation policies and bellicose actions toward Iran, as well as the relationship between U.S. and Israeli militarism. But how will this impact their future as activists in electoral politics? Will they remain mostly captive to the Democratic Party, voicing opposition while accepting candidates captured and mentored by AIPAC? Audio Download

Allan C. Brownfeld, American Council for Judaism, discusses the growing disillusionment of American Jews, and some Israelis, with the Jewish state and Zionism. Young American Jews who champion civil rights at home, including the right to vote, freedom of movement, due process and equality, realize that Israel is denying those same basic rights to Palestinians. Peter Beinart, Seth Rogen, Marc Maron and other Jewish Americans who are urging Israel to dismantle its apartheid policies face bitter attacks from the Israel lobby and Jewish Establishment organizations, charging they’ve “crossed a line.” Brownfeld will offer some suggestions about how progressive Jewish voters can influence both the Democratic and Republican parties.  Audio Download

09/02/2020 Israel Propaganda in the News Media with UMass Professor Emeritus Sut Jhally. University of Massachusetts Professor Emeritus Sut Jhally presents key findings from, and comments on, select clips shown from his 2016 documentary, "The Occupation of the American Mind," which analyzes pro-Israel public relations efforts within the U.S. Featuring leading observers of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and U.S. media, the film explores how the pro-Israel lobby shapes American media coverage of the conflict in Israel's favor. From the U.S.-based public relations campaigns that emerged in the 1980s to today, the film provides a sweeping analysis of Israel’s decades-long battle for the hearts, minds, and tax dollars of the American people in the face of widening international condemnation of Israel's human rights violations and military occupation. Jhally also analyzes whether the news media have been getting better—or worse—since the documentary was produced, and whether election-season news coverage is likely to cover—or cover up—growing challenges to standard pro-Israel narratives and politics. Audio Download.

08/17/2020 Grant Smith joins the show for another look at the Virginia Israel Advisory Board, a government entity associated with the state of Virginia that allocates taxpayer money to Israeli companies starting operations in the U.S. The projects, Smith explains, aren’t viable on their own, or else they wouldn’t need the massive subsidies from the public sector—but after getting the money, they can often put local competitors out of business because of their unnatural advantage. When these projects do fail, as illustrated by a recent biodiesel project, standard practice has been to forgive repayment of the grants. Smith describes the whole endeavor as privatized gains and socialized losses writ large. Audio Download

7/12/2020 Covid-19 Relief Money Helping to Fund the Israel Lobby.  Grant Smith discusses the Israel lobby’s deep involvement in the U.S. economy, this time as regards the American firms in the business of promoting Israeli interests, who have recently received large sums of money through special coronavirus relief programs. Smith cross-referenced the list of companies receiving such aid with pro-Israel lobbying groups from his previous research, finding a great deal of overlap, particularly among the recipients of large “loans” (which under certain circumstances don’t even need to be repaid). These firms include the Zionist Organization of America, Friends of the IDF and the Israeli American Council, among others. Smith hopes that bringing this type of influence to light will also help Americans understand the Israeli government’s unjust and inhumane subjugation of the Palestinian people, and the many ways that our government enables it. 06/17/2020 Countering harmful Israel lobby initiatives at the state level—A conversation with the Virginia Coalition for Human Rights. Fighting questionable edits to VA textbooks, the case against VIAB, and the expansion of Israeli human rights violator Energix in Virginia. Audio Download

05/04/2020 David Swanson, host of Talk Nation Radio, interviews Grant F. Smith to discuss his latest and ninth book about the Israel lobby called The Israel Lobby Enters State Government: Rise Of The Virginia Israel Advisory Board. Find the paperback at Middle East Books & More. Audio Download

04/24/2020 Scott talks to Grant Smith about his organization’s Freedom of Information lawsuit against the IRS, an attempt to get the agency to reveal its policies on tax-exempt organizations overseas. Of particular interest is the shocking fact that billions of dollars of tax-deductible money has been donated by American taxpayers in recent years to fund organizations that build settlements on Palestinian land. This makes no sense, says Smith, since the point of such tax policies is to offset “public good” costs that would otherwise be shouldered by the U.S. government. Not only do these activities service no such need, they are actually causing great harm to Palestinians. Audio Download

03/13/2020 Grant Smith, director of the Institute for Research: Middle Eastern Policy, joins me to discuss the Israel Lobby, the Israel Lobby Conference, and his new book The Israel Lobby Enters State Government: Rise of the Virginia Israel Advisory Board. 11/9/2019 IRmep presentation at the Palestine Center’s annual conference. It covered the how the Gallup Organization’s misleading polls about U.S. "sympathy" for Israel would have been deployed to falsely claim Americans support the Kushner-Friedman-Greenblatt Middle East "Deal of the Century," much like they have been used by the Congressional Research Service to insinuate Americans support massive U.S. foreign assistance to Israel. How Gallup was confronted until it finally admitted its bellwether poll was biased. What most Americans really think about the principle of the economic "Deal of the Century." How Virginians view their own mini "Deal of the Century" advanced by Israel partisans placed inside their own state government by Israel lobby campaign contributions. The relative policy influence potential of the public opinions of the American majority vs economic elites and interest groups, in this case the U.S. Israel advocacy ecosystem. Audio Download

06/26/2019 Grant Smith elaborates on his May 20th article, “”Lesson from FBI’s ‘Niger Uranium Forgeries’ File: There will be no consequences for twisting intelligence to attack Iran.” It was based on his obtaining, through FOIA, and analyzing the 640 pages of FBI records In which he describes then FBI director, Robert Mueller stifled efforts to investigate possible Washington (obviously neocon) links to the forgery of documents ostensibly from Niger purporting to have offered to sell and ship 500 tons of yellow cake uranium that could only have been used in the production of nuclear weapons. Audio Download

05/24/2019 Scott Horton talks to Grant Smith about his work obtaining secret government documents by FOIA request. This time Smith has gotten a 640-page document outlining Bush administration intelligence on Iraq’s nuclear weapons in the leadup to the Iraq war. Audio Download

04/26/2019 Grant Smith comes back on the Scott Horton Show to explain the polling around American support for Palestine. Last month Gallup quietly revealed that support for Israel among Americans is much lower than it has been claiming in decades of polling releases. In the past these polls, which always claimed Americans favored Israel, have been used to justify Israel’s privileged status in American foreign policy—so it’s no wonder powerful forces want to keep results like this quiet. Audio Download

03/22/2019 In 1969, the Department of Defense, intelligence community and Department of State recommended President Richard Nixon uphold the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and pressure the Israelis to stop their nuclear weapons program by withholding U.S. arms. U.S. deliberations considered Israel’s illegal diversion of U.S. weapons grade uranium.

However, the Nixon administration adopted Israel’s policy of “ambiguity” toward Israel’s nukes. Why did this happen? How has “ambiguity” been maintained for a half century? What law governs U.S. foreign aid to non-NPT signatory nuclear countries, and how is this law continually subverted? How has the pattern of action leading to “ambiguity” been repeated in other key U.S. policy areas of interest to Israel and its lobby?  Audio Download

2/11/2019 Flashpoints host Dennis Bernstein and IRmep's Grant F. Smith discuss the Twitter and media frenzy unleashed by Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar's brief tweet about the Israel lobby and money. How did AIPAC reconstitute after the Department of Justice ordered it to register as an Israeli foreign agent? How does AIPAC wield power and influence? Why does establishment media do such a poor job reporting on Israel Palestine and the lobby? What cracks are starting to appear? Audio Download

01/18/2019 Grant Smith talks to Scott about Israel’s nuclear weapons program, which the United States steadfastly pretends does not exist. Four presidential administrations in a row, he explains, have signed letters promising they will not admit the existence of Israel’s nukes, partly because to do so would be to admit that the U.S. is in violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. So why doesn’t Israel just own up to its nuclear program and sign the treaty? Smith thinks it’s because that would undermine their hysterical claims about how dangerous other Middle Eastern countries, like Iran, would be if they got nukes. Audio Download

11/9/2018 Grant Smith comes on the Scott Horton Show to talk about his latest article on the secret transfer of intelligence aid from the US to Israel, and the intelligence community's assumption that if Israel attacks Iran, the U.S. will automatically be forced to take Israel's side in a regional war. 10/08/2018 Israel is the only nuclear power on Earth that has not only refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Agreement, but enforces a vow of silence on U.S. presidents from both political parties. The Washington DC-based Institute for Research on Middle Eastern Policy has filed suit in federal court to make public letters that the New Yorker magazine says every president since Bill Clinton has signed, promising to never publicly discuss Israel’s arsenal of nuclear weapons or to pressure Israel to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. We spoke with Grant Smith, director of the Institute, and asked him, How could it be that, for two generations, all discussion of Israeli nukes has been forbidden in official Washington? 5/24/2017 Summary: Grant Smith of IRmep,a keen observer of AIPAC and the institutions of the Israel Lobby, notes how the presence of right-wing pro-Israel, pro-settlers in Trump's White House and family, makes the historic role of AIPAC and the Conference of Major American Jewish Organizations redundant and accounts for the failure of Trump to observe the tradition of past US presidents in consulting with them before he has meetings with an Israeli prime minister or travels to Israel or the Middle East.

AIPAC's other role, steering funds to campaigns of pro-Israel politicians, remains as important as ever, given the inflation of the amounts of money required to run Congressional campaigns when there are no limits placed on donors.

Smith notes how in the midst of Russia concerns, mainstream media has ignored the larger role of other foreign governments, not only Israel, but Turkey, Saudi Arabia, etc., in purchasing US lobbyists to make their cases in Washington, but refers to a series of articles on Consortium News as a welcome exception as part of arguing that while the mainstream media remains unchanged in its coverage of Israel-related issues, social media is beginning to make its presence felt.

He points out that polls he has fielded show Americans to he ahead of their politicians, citing as an example, a poll that showed that the majority of Americans supported the Obama administration's decision not to veto the UNSC resolution criticizing Israeli settlements and that 28% of the public think Israel is liable to get the US into a major war, only exceeded by South Korea among US allies.

He also speaks of the progress in his federal cases to hold back issuing of US aid to Israel because it violates the Glenn-Symington amendments making aid to non-signers of the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty that are engaged in building or buying nuclear weapons against the law which the US has ignored, and his challenge to a federal gag order imposed by President Obama making it illegal for federal employees to speak about Israel's nuclear weapons program.

As for Trump, Smith points out that the president has learned nothing from the events of 9-11, by doubling down on US support and aid for Saudi Arabia and offering his full support for Netanyahu on his trip to Israel, noting that these were the two issues which outraged Osama bin Laden, the presence of US bases in Saudi Arabia and its support for Israeli occupation of Palestine. - Program Notes by Jeffrey Blankfort - Podcast Feed  Audio download

Smith discusses key points developed in his new book, Big Israel: How Israel's Lobby Moves America, while providing insight into likely Israel lobby demands on the next administration. Smith is the director of the Institute for Research: Middle Eastern Policy, Inc.

Agenda items include:

1. Where did the Israel lobby come from? Before they evolved into a lobby for Israel, what social welfare needs did key organizations address and how?
2. What function does each major category of the Israel lobby serve? Which organizations lobby congress for foreign aid, and how do they work with hundreds of state-level lobbies to secure U.S. economic, diplomatic, financial and military support for Israel?
3. What Israel lobby organizations influence the media and what are their tactics? What core messaging and issue framing campaigns have they launched, and how have these changed over time?
4. Which Israel lobbying organizations work to sanction and punish domestic opposition to pro-Israel policies? What are their tactics?
5. Why has the United States provided more foreign aid to Israel than any other foreign country? How has American public opinion about aid changed over time?
6. How representative of the American Jewish community is the Israel lobby?
7. What key objectives will the Israel lobby try to achieve during the next administration?
8. What opposition has been mounted against Israel lobby programs, and how has this opposition changed over time?

5/25/2016 KZYX - Takes on the World - Big Israel Grant F. Smith elaborates on contents of his new book, Big Israel, How the Israel Lobby Moves America, which details the money-for-Israel tax exempt “achievements” of several hundred Israel affinity organizations whose major activity is raising and sending money to Israel; how the IRS and the Justice Dept. look the other way over crimes when Israel lobby activity is involved. Smith points out that these groups that purport to represent American Jews, do so for only a small influential minority; he explodes the myth that Christian evangelicals, eg Christians United for Israel, play major role in Israel Lobbying, notes they have been funded by major Israel lobby donors; as an example of their influence on media, he notes that a majority of Americans uniquely believe that Palestinians occupy Israeli land where populations of Canada, Mexico, and the UK know it's the other way around; discusses pressure from groups like CAMERA to keep the media in check and argues that challenging the Israel Lobby tackles the root of the problem, beyond opposing the Israeli occupation. Jeffrey Blankfort interviews Grant F. Smith about the unanswered questions remaining from Jonathan Pollard spy case; the identity of mysterious Mr. X or Mega who provided control numbers of top secret government files to Pollard's handlers that Israel's spy was tasked to produce and copy; why those in the pro-Israel community who assisted him, arranging the first contact with Israel Embassy and another who provided secure apartment where documents could be copied, were not indicted as “accessories after the fact,” and the monetary value of secrets sold by Pollard. Smith also speaks about other known major Israeli spy cases in which Israel's agents went unpunished, suggesting that the Pollard prosecution was diversion from hunt for Mr. X. Other agents discussed were Zalman Shapiro, whose NUMEC corporation in Apollo, PA diverted enriched weapons grade uranium for Israel's nuclear weapons to Israel, leaving the town a toxic superfund site, Ben-Ami Kadish and Arnon Milchan, the Israeli-born Hollywood producer who worked for Mossad, obtaining nuclear triggers for Israel with Netanyahu on receiving end in Israel, according to and FBI document that mainstream media refuses to report.
